Blogging -- The Writer's Life

I've got a creator blog over at www.donnabarr.blogspot.com It's a public blog, so no one has to register or log in.

I'm scratching my head over what to say about my writing process. It's basically: hear stuff, see stuff, make my characters do and say it. It's not hard to make any of it funny, because practically everything humans do is ridiculous, if not amusing.

If you don't think so, the next time you see a human doing something scary, bold or hectic, picture a chimp. The moves are the same.

So is the screaming.

Writer's Block: Friends Forever

What do I bring most to a friendship? Loyalty. For years. Through knee-deep crap and craziness. But I don't have many people I would count as my closest friends, so it's not a major chore.

Writer's Block: No Laughing Matter

What do you think is too serious to joke about?

View other answers

Nothing -- if you know what you're talking about. If you're Jewish, you can make the pogrom joke. If you're black, you can use the baby(crap) description. If you're a woman, you can say, "Stupid twat!" Otherwise, you will just look undipt. You don't want to sound like a kid learning to curse. Or the writers of "Deadwood," whose characters swear like 19th century British sailors, instead of white folks on the American frontier.

Name that Manga

Contest: Manga the German Military Journal Entry: Sat Mar 29, 2008, 10:08 AM
<keeper for="Smoothie.thumbs"></keeper><smoothie q="journal:17571120 by:rummelhart" qx="0" label="Journal: Contest: Manga the German Military" offset="0"></smoothie>More Desert Peach free downloads at [link] (Search: Donna Barr).

Looking for JUST the Japanese word to describe the interest in the German army* I find among so many of my gender (regardless of their meat body). It NEEDS to be a Manga genre!

The goal is to push my own work as the classic of the genre, and drag along anybody else who wants to blitz the Asian market, with a known genre. The more bees, the more flowers! (Even if they are little flowers with Stahlhelm or Offiziersmuetze).

Whoever comes up with JUST the right term -- including katakana and kanji -- will be given credit and thanks in my next book, and a link to their art site. Please don't be afraid of introducing me to all the details of Manga parlance.

Get out those Japanese dictionaries and go down in Manga history. Or flames, if you have the Noble Death mindset.

Deadline: April 30th.

*For you obsessive types, this could include extra terms for German Army/Gay, German Military, German Military/Cutey, etc. We Germans are anal and proud of it!

Home: [link]
More books: [link]

Hey...

Dan and I -- for absolutely no reason we can think of -- are slowly picking up the Chinook Jargon.

For those of you who wish to join me in writing totally illegible email:

http://chinookjargon.home.att.net

Spose alki mika mamook tenas stick wawa. Nawitka?

(Which probably isn't right... but I bet you'll be able to understand it anyway. Chinook jargon is a bunch of words you string together to make new meanings. It can be quite expressive. Everybody spoke it -- Indian, Europeans and Americans, Chinese -- everybody. Kumtucks?)

Tum-tum kahkwa chick-chick.
