I tried to be good and frugal and borrowed "Torchwood" from the library. But this show hits all my ticky boxes and so I just ordered it to own. Tortured heroic hero, strong female characters, eye candy, backstory and foreshadowing up the yinyang, and Intense. I can't watch one episode after another because, at least in the four episodes I've watched so far, Things Matter. And I get involved emotionally and need to take breaks.
Yes, having watched Jack's introduction with the Ninth Doctor, and seasons one and two of the Tenth (the Donna ones haven't shown here yet), I know the importance of The Hand, and other bits that get mentioned. So it matters even more.
Coincidence? I turned off the DVD player after watching episode 2, and the tv channel was also showing Jack and Torchwood. See, Friday is the season two opener here. Ah, Jack. And Gwen. And everyone. I generally dislike sitcoms (stupid people behaving stupidly) and don't watch true crime dramas or soap operas, but give me a great hero and passion about the world AND about people, and I'm a goner.

As I was opening the blinds in the kitchen, I saw our squirrel friend scampering across the yard with a peach in his mouth. The peach was easily twice the size of his head, so there was this little gray squirrel with a huge peach. I was amused. |

Bad news: I wrote a script for a manga series called COUPLERS. It was a project from a friend of mine, Buzz Dixon. Sadly, after publishing the first two issues, the publisher pulled out, so it looks like I'll never get to see the story in print.
Good news: I received my first royalty check for the Grail script book and a very satisfactory chunk of change it is. It went straight into the savings account. |

Keep your fingers crossed! Okay. Submitted "Memento Mori" yet again, and this time, the email did not come bouncing right back to me. Hopefully that means the editor actually got the thing. :P Current Mood: sore |

As you may recall, my first attempt to submit to WARRIOR WISEWOMEN was rejected because I sent the file in the wrong format. This time? The email didn't even make it to the editor, but was bounced back by the mailer-daemon as "undeliverable." If I wasn't a skeptic, I'd say the story was cursed. Either that, or the Universe just doesn't want me submitting to WW. :P Before anyone asks, yes, I will re-send the file ... tomorrow. Tonight, I am going to lie on the day bed with a cup of tea and watch the latest episode of PSYCH. Current Mood: annoyed |

There was a major reshuffling of people at the company. We now occupy more than one entire floor of the building and the moves create more cohesion of people who need to be working closely together.
In the general upheaval, Randy and I were given our very own office. Just like the old days, the two of us in a smallish room with a door we can close and everything. Mind you, the wall facing the rest of the office is entirely glass, so privacy isn't part of it, but it's a lot easier to get work done this way. The downside is that I also feel somewhat cut off from the rest of the team now and the new view out this window is butt-ugly compared to our previous view. But hey, we have our own office. |

Today fall arrived on wind and fog and the smell of crisp, chill air. It's still July, dash it. Hopefully this is short-lived and we will return soon to sunshine and beach temperatures (at least by locals' standards), although this is refreshing and makes me want to cozy under a fluffy duvet with a good book (or someone who's read one).
But it's too early for this by a good month. |

Take one refrigerator which makes loud shuddering noises whenever the compressor turns off. Review size of cabinet it must fit into, find out best-practice leaves at least 2" on each side (and on top) for circulation of air. Find Sears website actually lists fridges by height! Find adequate fridge that will fit. Then find out it's on sale. Plus there's an Energy Star rebate of $50. Plus reward of $30 if we call the right people to haul away our old working fridge. Translation: we are getting a new fridge shortly.
The old one was 16+ years old and the noise is considerable on quiet nights. Only a matter of time before it dies, and the new one looks to use only 1/3 the amount of energy which our electric bill will appreciate.
And, inally fridge and dishwasher will match! (White.) |

Comic Con was insane and crowded and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I ran into a few of my co-workers and we went to a couple of panels together. I was able to find and say hello to people I've known for nigh onto...ummm...well, decades. The comic book crowd including Sergio Aragones, Howie Chaykin, Steve Leiahloa, Steven Grant and of course Wendy Pini. The animation (crossover comics) crowd including Len Wein and Marv Wolfman and tons of animation friends and more than I can remember to list.
A big shout-out to Len for being inducted into the Comics Hall of Fame! They couldn't have picked a nicer guy.
I went to several panels, most of which proved to be an utter waste of time. The best and most useful one was on publishing childrens' and YA material, including another dear friend, James Owen, with his very cool Here There Be Dragons illustrated series.
I observed that E3, having ceased to exist elsewhere, has basically migrated over to the SDCC. I'd say games occupied nearly a fourth of the attention, with major companies like Sony and Capcom and others having large booths. X-Box Live had a smaller booth, but managed to have a large presence via panels. Lots of games being demoed, but the whole affair is getting too noisy. E3 was always a damned headache for that reason, so I hope they keep it under control.
I scored some dichroic glass jewelry and three small winged cat illustrations. When I first started collecting winged cats, they were fairly rare, now they're friggin' everywhere. I refrained from buying tons of them because I have nowhere to display them and 99% of my current collection remains packed in boxes, so it seems rather pointless.
There's no way I can catch up on everybody's LJ, so if anything earth shattering happened over the weekend, let me know. |

Looking at the fashions for fall in Vogue, etc., it appears to be 1962-4 all over again. Are the designers predicting/referencing Camelot Revisited, with Obama for JFK? Dressy daytime suits in wools and boucles, formal hairstyles off the neck, stiff fabrics and cuts that fit the body closely with the highest heels shown yet.
Fascinating. |
